To determine cost of living you have to take into account two important factors no matter what state you live in: Median housing prices and Median wages. A good balance between these two factors make a very affordable cost of living.

California, not one of the most affordable places to live ranks in the top ten most expensive housing markets. The average single family home goes for $835,000. This naturally makes Californian's mostly renters or Oregonians. Research I have done indicates that median housing income (the hourly wage a person must earn working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year to be able to afford housing) is around $23.00 per hour while the average income is around $14.00 per hour. It's pretty clear that homemakers are rare in California and roommates are required if you are single. Apartment rent ranges anywhere from $1100 to $3250 per month. Anaheim is the least expensive at a little over $1200 per month, while Santa Monica is the most expensive at $3200.00 per month.

Other of living statistics for California:$29.38 garbage $23.50 water $25.10 sewer. These are the average monthly bills California's pay for their utilities. Gas prices are currently down averaging $3.69 per gallon. Average wages per trade: Administrative assistant-$15.00 per hr, registered nurse $32.00 per hr, customer service representive-$13.25 per hr, execute assistant $20.00 per hr.
